Some Examples of Our Work

Dilly Mtui who, with over 25 years' experience as a primary school headteacher, has invaluable knowledge and expertise, works once a week in each school with all that school's teachers for a training session. The sessions assist the teachers to understand difficult topics in the syllabi and once a month they focus on the administration of the school.

In May 2007 each headteacher and deputy headteacher together with a district inspector attended a week-long course on team-building with practical emphasis on how to motivate each school's teachers in order to develop a sense of pride in and loyalty to the school and the work within it, and to work together to share duties and responsibilities. This is now being followed-up.

In January 2007 the new pre-primary school opened as part of Mshiri primary school. Helen Doherty, a retired infants' teacher from the UK, volunteered for three months working with the local teacher, Mama Matesha. Helen implemented many new practices including lining-up in the morning, story-telling, and fun learning activities with water, sand, wooden bricks etc.

In August 2007, teachers from 18 primary schools attended a four-day workshop to help them to teach the young pre-primary pupils using play and active-learning techniques. A follow-up seminar is planned for January 2008.

In October 2007, Ed Brunet began a six-month engagement at Mshiri primary school to continue Helen Doherty's work at the pre-primary school with Mama Matesha.

In December 2007, a further heads' and deputies' course was held with greater emphasis on each school's particular needs. A programme of follow-up visits to the schools by the course trainer is in place.
